It’s a common misconception that the more time you spend in gym lifting weights then the more likely your muscles are going to grow. Spending hours on end in the gym doesn’t necessarily mean that you are getting the most from your workout.
It may seem logical to spend more time in the gym but unfortunately our bodies don’t always work the way we expect. There are plenty of studies that has shown that less is more when you are looking to get bigger and stronger.
How Long Should You Workout?
During a workout your body will naturally produce more testosterone causing levels to rise past their normal range. More testosterone will help rebuild muscle fibres, promote muscle growth and speed up recovery times.
However, studies have shown that these levels hit a peak after around 30 minutes of intense training. After 45 minutes these levels are coming down back into normal range and after 60 minutes your testosterone production slows down and cortisol levels start to rise.
Cortisol is the hormone that eats away at muscle tissue and cause’s your body to store more fat. You want to do everything you can to avoid this.
A workout should last somewhere between 45 – 60 minutes. This means you should get in the gym, hit your workout hard, then get out. Stay clear from distractions such as phones and TV, these will slow your workouts down.
After 45 – 60 minutes of intense training your body starts to lose steam and it becomes more difficult to keep hitting it hard. You are best to keep your workouts under 60 minutes and save your strength for the next day.
A good workout starts with a good 10 minute warm up (this does not count towards your workout time) with stretches and exercises, followed by a 45 – 60 minute workout.
