How Does a Rower Work?
Rowers are one of the easiest pieces of gym equipment to use. The machine consists of a movable seat and a handle, and not much else. You sit on the seat, placing your feet firmly on the footrests toward the head of the machine, where the cord coils around. Grab the handle and simply pull back with your arms, pushing with your feet at the same time.
This push-pull dynamic means that you’re using multiple muscle groups in different ways at the same time. Furthermore, you’re using both your upper- and lower-body. With a wonderful workout like that, I just can’t understand why more people aren’t using this great machine!
Rowers and Interval Training
One of the hottest trends in fitness today is high-intensity interval training, or HIIT. Simply put, HIIT is when you do very vigorous exercises in short bursts. So let’s say you’re using a rower. After a quick warm up to get your blood flowing, you would go all out, as fast as you can for 30-40 seconds before slowing down to a more relaxed pace for 15-20 seconds, and then repeat.
Now, that’s quite a regimen if you repeat it 8-10 times, and quite the full-body workout on a rower. You should probably set an easier pace if you’re just starting out on a rower, but if you’ve been doing HIIT exercises for some time, the rower would be a good break from your normal routine. You’re not going to find that level of fitness from just using a treadmill, which really doesn’t target your upper body like a rowing machine does.
