What Made You Turn Your Life Around?

I was already pretty fit before getting pregnant, but I “fell off the wagon”, so-to-speak during the last 3 weeks of my pregnancy. I stopped working out and ate horribly. I am a “reformed junk-food junkie” and I fell back into my old ways because I was just so uncomfortable toward the end. If it was fried or covered in sugar or salt, I probably ate it those last few weeks. I gained more weight than I wanted all in those last few weeks and had no energy.

How Did You Do It?

I was already pretty fit before getting pregnant, but I “fell off the wagon”, so-to-speak during the last 3 weeks of my pregnancy. I stopped working out and ate horribly. I am a “reformed junk-food junkie” and I fell back into my old ways because I was just so uncomfortable toward the end. If it was fried or covered in sugar or salt, I probably ate it those last few weeks. I gained more weight than I wanted all in those last few weeks and had no energy.

What Helped You Stay Motivated?

I wanted to be the best example possible, in every way, for my little girl. I struggled with healthy eating in my adult life b/c as a child, my parents let me eat whatever I wanted, which was always junk food- so I struggle daily with eating healthy and I don’t want that for her. I want her to effortlessly lead a healthy life- by being active and wanting to eat healthy.

What Was Your Approach To Training?

Slowly but surely. I thought it would be much faster recovery, but with a colicky and acid reflux baby, 110% of my energy and attention was being demanded of me those first 4-6 weeks. Then I realized that if I wanted more energy, I would have to get back to my regular workout routine. I know most sleep-deprived mothers don’t even want to think about working out, let alone training, but it’s true- soon as I got back to it, my energy levels sky rocketed.

What Does Your Training Plan Look Like?

I followed one a basic strength training plan breaking up lifts by body part and doing HIIT cardio 2x’s a week first thing in the morning and 4 days of steady-state cardio first thing in the morning as well.

Day 1: Morning – ½ hour steady state cardio/ Evening – Back
Day 2: Morning – ½ hour steady state cardio/ Evening – Shoulders
Day 3: Morning – 20 minutes HIIT cardio/ Evening – REST
Day 4: Morning – ½ hour steady state cardio/ Evening – Legs
Day 5: Morning – ½ hour steady state cardio/ Evening – Arms
Day 6: Morning – 20 minutes HIIT cardio/ Evening – REST
Day 7: Rest Day

What Does Your Nutrition Plan Look Like?

I ate incredibly clean – whole grains, lean proteins, lots of fruits and veggies, drank lots of water and ate every 2-3 hours. Simple. I just have to be organized and prepare my food ahead of time (usually twice a week on Sundays and Thursday) to ensure that I had healthy choices readily available throughout the week so there was less temptation to go out to eat.

Meal 1:

6 egg whites
salsa

Meal 2 :

1/2 cup oatmeal
cottage cheese
fruit

Meal 3:

protein shake

Meal 4:

wheat bread
peanut butter

Meal 5:

chicken
wheat pasta
heart healthy pasta sauce

Meal 6:

greek yogurt
fruit

Meal 7:

tilapia
green beans
sweet potato

Did You Allow Yourself Cheat Meals?

I did allow myself cheat meals while I lost the baby weight. However, during contest season, it became much stricter. I allowed 2 cheat meals a week up till the last 6 weeks, then no more cheat meals.

What Supplements Did You Use?

Dymatize – Iso 100 Whey Protein, Creatine, Glutamine, BCAA’s, thermogenics during contest prep for enery, and vitamins.

What Is Your Lifestyle Like Now?

A huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I used to constantly struggle and want to go off the wagon. Now I have a little one watching my every move and I want to lead by example the life I want her to have. I now realize that the immediate satisfaction of eating something unhealthy is nothing compared to the feeling of being in the best shape of your life every day. Age is just a number. I plan on being my absolute best every year- setting and reaching new goals.

Any Suggestions For Others?

Set a specific goal and have a driving factor/greater purpose that inspires you to achieve it- and keep that close to your heart. Remember that it’s not going to be easy, but it will be worth it. Absolute health is a lifestyle change and one that you’ll never regret.
